Dog park

A Vote of Confidence in Dog Park. We’re rallying together to improve and invest in our City’s most popular off-leash areas while ensuring that we protect the rights of people who love their neighborhood parks. Dog owners must have a place to take their dogs away from other people because, well, dogs are animals, and animals are better off when they’re not cooped up in your apartment waiting for you all day.

Dog parks are great places; there are no children who might run around screaming or splash puddles of water on your pants or “accidentally” kick sand into your soul because they’re walking through the dog park to get to the baseball field next door. There aren’t any cartoonishly dressed tourists dancing around with selfie sticks blocking our view of the sunset. It’s just dogs doing dog things together without being so hyper-concerned with being on human time.

But dog parks are more than just fun places to hang out. Dog parks are necessary for pet owners to ensure their dog has a healthy lifestyle. When I take my dog Lakota to the dog beach, he won’t get if we were stuck in my apartment all day. And when he gets home, I’m not worried about how much energy he has because he’s already exhausted himself by running with his dog friends (which is another essential thing, dogs need friends). It’s also good for him mentally; it gives him something new to smell and explores with his nose instead of smelling the same old things in your living room every day.

All dog parks need to be dog-friendly. That means they should have a dog water fountain, dog baggies to pick up the poop. Every dog park also needs human bathrooms, trash cans, and a place for people’s belongings that doesn’t look like somebody vomited all their clothes on one bench. Dog Parks are less about dogs playing with people and more about dogs playing with other dogs, which is why there should be one person per dog at dog parks or two loose dogs per adult human.

Dog parks need better funding, but not from taxpayers because dog owners pay fees of anywhere between $20-55 dollars depending on where you live in the City of Los Angeles. This money goes directly to dog park maintenance and staffing, which means dog owners are the only people who should be expected to pay for dog parks, not City taxpayers who can’t even walk their dog without having to pick up its poop first.

The non-partisan grassroots committee Proposition B is dedicated to improving dog parks in LA, including off-leash dog areas, by adding shade structures over the dog water fountains so dogs can drink when it’s hot outside. But Proposition B would also expand the number of dog parks around LA by 50%, create paths where dog owners can walk their dogs together instead of taking two cars or tying them up at opposite ends of a park while they walk miles away from each other to avoid dog fights.

So this November 8th, vote “yes” on Proposition B to show dog owners that you care about dog park funding just as much as we do. Proposition B shows that dog owners are no longer an afterthought which is why our pets don’t deserve it any other way. Dogs bark in the dog park because they’re happy, not because they hate children or anything like that.-Dogs should be able to come to dog parks without leashes because there’s no reason why dogs can’t be friendly with each other. Dog parks are great for your pet’s mental and physical health. Dog parks need better funding without taxing City taxpayers. Vote “yes” on Proposition B to fund dog parks the right way.
